Position Summary:

The Head of Public Services oversees the public services activities of the university library, including research help, circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, instruction, and outreach. The position reports to the Library Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Leads the library in developing and managing an effective, engaging, and sustainable information literacy program, including teaching two sections per semester of the 1-credit Introduction to Library Resources course (LBMD2001).

Coordinates the library's outreach and engagement activities, including its social media presence.

Supervises public services staff, including staff in Circulation, Research Services, and Interlibrary Loan.

Engages in professional and scholarly activities that enhance the university, the library, the community, or the library profession.

Works with faculty in designated disciplines to develop collections and services under a liaison model.

Oversees the development and management of the Curriculum Materials Center.

Develops and collaboratively implements a library-wide public service philosophy in partnership with librarians and staff.

Coordinates the library's participation in campus-wide initiatives for Open Educational Resources (OER) and Zero Textbook costs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience using a variety of electronic research databases and reference tools.

Experience teaching research skills and information literacy to students in a variety of formats.

Ability to collaborate with teaching faculty to support student learning outcomes and student engagement.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Interest or background in emerging technologies or trends and how they intersect with research services, e.g., AI, digital literacy, OER, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

A master's degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution.

5-7 years of relevant professional experience, including 3-5 years of demonstrated supervisory experience.

Practical knowledge of classic information literacy competencies, as well as ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience managing public services in an academic library.

Significant experience providing research services in an academic library.

Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues in library public services, including best practices for social media engagement.

Experience assessing user experience, engagement, and learning to improve library services.

Experience at the Associate, Full Librarian, or the equivalent level.

Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:

Position is primarily located in an indoor library, classroom, and office environment.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Ability to assist others using print and online library resources.

Ability to visit other buildings on campus for meetings and teaching assignments.
