Summary
The Archival Assistant is responsible for the processing and maintaining of archival itemsand collections. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Receives archival items and determines physical condition and historical significance. Categorizes items and arranges into chronological, alphabetical, or numerical order. Places items in folders or boxes and stores on shelves by classification. Prepares and maintains inventory listing on each item processed. Researches various sources to obtain needed information about items or collections, suchas the identity of person or persons contained in collection. Writes bibliographic sketches to include in collection index. Assists patrons by pulling materials, giving tours, and providing reference service. Responds to specific inquires or requests by conducting searches, making referrals, and/orcompiling needed materials. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of the principles and practices of collection, compilation, and analysis of archivalmaterials. Ability to process and categorize archival materials. Ability to prepare bibliographic sketches from research on archival materials. Ability to compile and disseminate information on archival materials and available resources.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus four years of specializedtraining and/or experience in library science, historical archival or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

This is a full time position with the Arkansas State Archives, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage in Little Rock. This position earns $29,046 per year and offers a full benefit package including paid holidays, annual and sick leave, health and life insurance and retirement. Scope of work:
• Monitoring archival facility environmental conditions and reporting issues of concern to State Historian.
• Supervising the work of the conservation lab, which includes the training and oversight of interns and volunteers.
• Performs condition assessments of new and existing archival materials for preservation issues (e.g., degrading film and/or unstable film, presence of active mold growth).
• Makes recommendations for/or mediating preservation concerns with new or existing archival materials.
• Conducting preservation, restoration and conservation tasks (e.g., repairs, cleaning, washing, encapsulation, mending, creating special enclosures, deacidification) according to archival best practices and standards.
• Consulting with other state agencies, museums, historical organizations, libraries and other entities on conservation/preservation issues.
• Providing preservation workshops for state agencies and the general public.
• Developing and maintaining agency's disaster preparedness plan.
• Advising and training agency staff on basic preservation methods and techniques.
• Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus four years of specialized training and/or experience in library science, historical archival or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in history, art, humanities, or related field.

Special Requirements:
• Occasional work outside normal office hours.
• Occasional travel for workshops or to pick up collections may be required.
• Ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without accommodations.
• Valid Arkansas drivers license.
• A pre-employment criminal background check is required.
• Position is subject to drug screening.
