Job Duties

Monitors environmental conditions of facilities and reports concern to director, curator, and archival managers of NEARA and SARA.  Supervises the work of the conservation lab, which includes the training and oversight of interns and volunteers.  Performs condition assessments of new and existing archival materials for preservation issues (e.g., degrading film and/or unstable film, presence of active mold growth).  Makes recommendations for/or mediating preservation concerns with new or existing archival materials.  Conducts preservation, restoration and conservation tasks (e.g., repairs, cleaning, washing, encapsulation, mending, creating special enclosures, deacidification) according to archival best practices and standards.

Creates unique housing/mountings for collections to ensure preservation of collection in storage and on display.  Consults with other state agencies, museums, historical organizations, libraries, and other entities on conservation/preservation issues.  Provides preservation workshops for state agencies, organizations, and the public.  Works with Curator to develop and maintenance of the ASA's Emergency Response plan and supplies.  Advises and trains agency staff on basic preservation methods and techniques.  Provides assistance in the preparation, framing, and installation of exhibits.

Applicants must meet or exceed these qualifications:  The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of specialized training in library science, historical, or a related field. 

Preferred Qualifications:  Bachelor's or advanced degree in history, art, humanities, or related field; experience with paper conservation.
